New Donation to the Rutgers-Camden Collection of Art

In memory of Dr. William Marlin

Soloist (1997) is a three-dimensional artwork by Phil Rychert that draws inspiration from the architecture of The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA. The piece features a window scene with a solo violinist, which has been meticulously painted on glass. Combining woodworking with hand-painted architectural details, custom stained-glass windows, and LED lights, Soloist creates a luminous effect that gives the artwork the appearance of a precious gem. The central figure of the solo violinist symbolizes the profound impact of classical music on both its admirers and creators.

Phil Rychert is an artist based in Pennsauken, NJ. He worked as an Art Technician at Camden County College for 21 years, from 1998 to 2019. This donation is made in memory of Dr. William Marlin (1931-2009), a Professor of Art at Camden County College from 1969-1997, and namesake of their Marlin Gallery. Dr Marlin was a dedicated supporter of Symphony in C, a highly regarded orchestra for young professionals in the Mid-Atlantic Region which performs here at Rutgers-Camden in the Gordon Theater.

The artwork is on display through the rest of 2024 in the Rutgers-Camden Fine Arts Building lobby, outside of the Gordon Theater and Stedman Gallery.
