Stages of Discovery
The broad range of music, theater, dance, and multi-disciplinary performances in this series has been selected for their high level of artistic quality and for their ability to engage student audiences. Teachers receive a resource packet to aid in integrating the performance concepts into the classroom curriculum.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Stages of Discovery performances contribute to the fulfillment of:
- New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.4 for the Performing Arts. Note about standards here.
- National Standards for Arts Education ~ Dance #'s 2, 3, 4; Music #'s 3, 6, 7, 8, 9; Theatre #'s 6, 7.
- Standards in other curricular areas, as determined by the content of each performance, such as math, science, literature, social studies, languages, and life values, among others.
Teachers receive a resource packet to aid in integrating the performance concepts into the classroom curriculum. Packets contain: descriptions of the performances; glossaries of related terms; directions for follow-up projects; a reading and website list for both students and teachers; and related discussion topics.
Before your visit, the teacher will receive:
- Confirmation letter for date and time of performance
- Directions, a map, and instructions for bus parking
- Performance and participatory component (1 hour)
- A teacher’s guide with information and activities linking the performance to the curriculum.

Theatreworks USA’s new musical co-written by Tony-nominated playwright Charles Busch is based on the best-selling books by James & Deborah Howe: BUNNICULA! The Monroe family comes home with an orphaned baby rabbit with sharp fangs, who sleeps all day and stays awake all night. Meanwhile, all the vegetables are drained of color. Could this be a coincidence, or could Bunnicula be a vampire? Chester the cat thinks so – he’ll stop at nothing until he vanquishes the new arrival, even if it means the end of his friendship with Harold the dog. Will Harold and Chester remain friends? Will Bunnicula find his mother?

This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Junot Diaz chronicles the life of Oscar de Leon, a Dominican boy growing up in Paterson, New Jersey who is obsessed with science fiction, falling in love, and the curse that has plagued his family for generations. The American Place Theatre's Literature to Life is a performance-based literacy program that presents verbatim adaptations of significant American literary works.

Luna Mexicana is about Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) held in Mexico as a celebration of family and friends in honor of their ancestors. Other short dance pieces are included. Students will be drawn into the drama, pageantry and narrative tradition of dance. Graham Lustig is an internationally recognized choreographer and teacher Graham Lustig, was trained at the Royal Ballet School in London. Mr. Lustig founded Lustig Dance Theatre in 2010.
